Ceramic Boards
Rigid, light ceramic fibre boards for furnace walls, back-up linings and heat shields. Easy to cut to shape.
Product Information
Product Details
A ceramic fibre board is a stiff, flat sheet made from ceramic fibres pressed together with a binder (a glue that holds the fibres). It insulates like a ceramic blanket but keeps its shape, so it can stand as a wall, carry a light load or face hot gas moving past it.
Main features
- Stiff and flat. Boards keep their shape, so they make neat walls, roofs and doors.
- Low weight. Much lighter than firebrick, so the furnace heats faster and uses less energy.
- Low heat loss. The fibres trap air, which slows the flow of heat.
- Easy to work with. Boards can be cut with a knife or saw and drilled on site.
- Good against thermal shock. They handle fast heating and cooling without cracking.
Temperature grades
Ceramic fibre products are sold by classification temperature (the highest temperature the material can take for a short time). Common grades are about 1,260 °C and 1,430 °C. For long use, choose a grade well above your real working temperature, usually 100–150 °C higher.
Typical sizes
Boards are usually made in sheets around 1,000 × 500 mm or 1,200 × 1,000 mm, with thicknesses from 10 to 50 mm. Other sizes and shapes cut to drawing are possible.
Where they are used
- Hot-face and back-up linings of furnaces and kilns
- Furnace doors and roofs
- Heat shields and fire barriers
- Linings for flues, ducts and burners
- Expansion joints and seals
Tips for use
- Some boards contain an organic binder that burns off the first time they are heated. A little smoke and smell is normal on the first firing.
- Wear gloves, long sleeves and a dust mask when cutting fibre products.
- Protect the board from water and from being hit or rubbed by the load.
